New research underscores the potential for a Viagra-like drugmaker to launch a new way to combat erectile dysfunction.
The world’s second-largest drugmaker is expected to announce plans for a $1.6 billion-a-year new drug, and plans to buy about 1.2 million shares of Pfizer’s stock.
Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that created Viagra and Pfizer’s blockbuster erection drug, is aiming to become the second largest drugmaker in the world behind Microsoft. Its top executives have been at the helm since the company began as a pharmaceutical company in the late 1990s.
For the past six years, Pfizer has been cutting deals with rival drug companies, with the latter adding another $1 billion a year to the company’s total. Pfizer is the world’s second-largest drug company, behind Microsoft. Sales of Viagra shot up from $4.4 billion in 1998 to $13.9 billion last year.
Pfizer CEO Ian Read has said he expects Pfizer to launch a generic version of Viagra in the next few years, as well as a brand-name version in the United States, in November. Pfizer and Microsoft are also trying to get a rival drug for erectile dysfunction.
